I enjoy working with natural materials, cotton boll stems and finding creative uses for found objects. My latest obsession is with cotton stems, succulents, nests and burlap. Our founders are Haley Gray, and Christine Schoaff. This company was born when Haley experienced care giving for both of her parents simultaneously, while caring for four small children, and working a full time job. Some of the caregivers which worked with her parents were fantastic. Some of them were not. Some of them outright neglected Haley’s father who had dementia and Parkinson’s, leaving him sitting in a soiled diaper for hours, and leaving him alone while on duty. Other caregivers weren’t so bad, and they just neglected to scoop the kitty litter box, resulting in a nasty, smelly apartment.
Haley spent hours talking to the good caregivers trying to understand what motivated them, and what didn’t. It became clear that most of the good caregivers consider this line of work to be a calling. Frankly, you can’t pay someone to do this kind of work, and expect them to want to do it. They have to WANT to do it. So, the question becomes- how do we attract, and retain the industry’s best and most caring caregivers? We surveyed a number of caregivers and other personnel in the industry to understand what was important to them. Then we set about to start a company which provided those things which were most important to the caregivers.
From the client side of the equation, Haley interviewed a number of other clients, as well as geriatric care managers, pharmacists, and others, to ask them what the best practices are in the industry. By combining their suggestions together, and putting together a business plan as part of Haley’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation Concentration at Duke, we had the basis of the company. We use technology where it is appropriate. We also use various low-tech approaches to care giving, such as better access to supervisors, random, unannounced drop-ins, and a note-book sharing system so that caregivers and family can communicate with one another about the state of their loved ones.
What this means for you is this- we aim to provide the best of both worlds. That means, better care for our clients, and a better work environment and conditions for our employees. It is quite simply, a win-win.
